What is Zentangle?
The Zentangle® Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. It was developed by Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts as they combined their backgrounds in drawing and meditative practices.
Almost anyone can use it to create beautiful images. It can increase focus and creativity, providing artistic satisfaction along with an increased sense of personal well being. By focusing on the simple, deliberate strokes as you draw, you can shift your mood and state of mind while you create art.
The Zentangle Method is typically practiced on small cards of high quality print making paper called tiles. The small size alleviates the pressure of working on something larger and feeling overwhelmed by the white space of the page. Tiles are started without a finished product in mind, so that you can remain focused on each stroke as you draw, not thinking ahead to the outcome. There are no mistakes in Zentangle! Only opportunities to adjust and go with the flow to see where it will take you.
Many people will continue working with the patterns and structures used in the Zentangle Method to create specific art pieces. These are referred to as Zentangle Inspired Art, or ZIAs, and are often what people are exposed to when they first learn of Zentangle. Do not let ZIAs scare you away! The Zentangle Method breaks patterns down and follows a process that most everyone is able to do.
