    They just keep multiplying!

    25th August, 2020 / Uncategorized / No Comments

For quite some time I have had the turtle as my animal totem to remind me that you only make progress when you stick out your neck, but a change has been taking place over the past couple of years and has now fully taken hold.

That’s right, I’m switching teams from the tortoise to the hare.

I have alway had a fondness for bunnies, had a few for pets, let them peruse our garden when I am feeling generous. They seem to show up for me during periods of change.

On my 50th birthday, Micki Wild posted one of her new rabbit paintings that I instantly connected with. It became my birthday present to me.

“She carries things deep inside her” by Micki Wild

Then last year during one of the sessions of an Artist’s Way group run by the Creative Light Factory, we did an exercise where we scribbled/drew on paper with our eyes closed as we thought about our creative path. Afterwards, we looked at our papers and found images within the scribbles that spoke to us. Guess what I found:

As part of that exercise, I delved into the symbolism of rabbits. They are said to be guides to the fairy world as they show up at dusk and dawn, supposedly when those pathways are open. They can be so still as to not be seen and spring into explosive action at a moments notice. But my favorite phrase to turn up was that they represent the undeniable current of growth.

During the past months of quarantine, I have grown quieter, and listened more, and the bunnies came back. Whether they are harbingers of change or just a reminder that things will continue beyond all of this chaos, I don’t know. I do know they have been comforting to paint, and they feel right for right now.

    [still to be named…] detail

I’m curious if any of you have had similar experiences – any symbols or signs that have been haunting and inspiring you this summer?

    Welcome to the new site!

    8th October, 2016 / Uncategorized / No Comments

So, we didn’t quite make the Labor Day launch of the new site, but we are up and running now!

It has a been a busy summer, with lots of changes going on. Both my husband and I left our old IT company so things were a bit up in the air as we transitioned jobs. Belts got tightened as we worked through the rest of summer camps, interviewing, writing proposals, back to school, and 8 year old birthday parties. Oh, and did I mention said 8 year old has become obsessed with snapchat selfies?

    Snapchat filters have taken over.

At this point, jobs have been secured, my husband is fully ensconced in his new position, and I am focusing on my art and Zentangle classes.

There are new classes posted for the fall, with a couple of fun holiday workshops coming soon.

I’ve also got a few events coming up where you can check out my work first hand.

So, please take a look around the new site. Let me know what you think (and if you notice anything funky. I think we caught and fixed everything, but you never can be too sure).

    Wait, what day is it?

11th May, 2015 / Creativity, Uncategorized, Writing / No Comments

Hello Everyone! What? Its been how long since I posted?

This site has been pretty neglected over the past year, but a revamp is in the works. This past fall brought a lot of changes, leaving a big corporate job after 9 years to join my husband’s company full-time, adjusting to my daughter starting first grade, and co-leading her girl scout troop. It took a while to get our new routines down, but with things slowing down as the end of the school year approaches, I am working to get the blog/site back up and active again.

I am working on a small revamp of the site, with some specific pages rather than having everything lumped together. In the coming months you will see a writing page which may be a mix of writing thoughts and story snippets as well as an art page which focused more on the visual art projects I am tackling. Part of these changes had also been dependent on a computer repair job being completed (because sometime technology is not your friend), so they are not quite ready to launch yet.

Hopefully you’ll be joining me as my journey continues this year. The rest of 2015 should be a good one!

    Where have you been?

    26th March, 2014 / Uncategorized / No Comments

Oh, it has been a rough couple of months. February and march flew by with way, way, WAY too much going on, so this poor little bloggy got left in the lurch. But, Spring is finally here (although we did get more snow last night) and it is time to get the house in order. So, a quick little post to set the stage on what is coming…

B taking over the drawing tablet.

B taking over the drawing tablet.

Going forward, I will be back with my Friday Favorite posts. April’s favorites will be focused on writing. Hopefully there will be some tidbits you enjoy and find interesting, even if you are not a writer.

Tuesday totals are just going to be posted once a month. First Tuesday of the month. Which means next week gets one on April first. April fool’s day! Should I go serious on that one, or have a bit of fun?

Garden updates will also be starting! We have 3 more raised beds to add to the plan this year and are getting the first of our cold weather crops in this weekend. I’ll be keeping you up to date on our progress there and May’s favorites will be garden related as well.

And then there will be the random writing and drawing posts, and whatever else may be catching my fancy. Let me know if there is anything you want to see more of.

    Happy Reading!

Out with the old, In with the new (kind of…)

    Happy New Year 2014!

    Happy New Year 2014!

It is that time of year when we all start thinking about resolutions for the new year, setting new goals for ourselves, thinking about making a fresh start this year. This type of reflection tends to hit especially hard for me as my birthday is just a few days away as well.

This year is not getting a long list of resolutions, though. Last year saw a lot of changes in direction and focus on living a better life by the whole family. This year, we just want to keep that momentum going and building on what we have.

Our key points to continue focusing on this year:

    • Eating less processed food
    • Getting more exercise as a family
    • Expand the garden (plan to add 2-3 more raised beds this spring)
    • Continue sharing creative expression

So, as you can see, nothing too strict or specific, so we don’t have the let down of broken resolutions. What is the point if they cause more discouragement than progress? I’ll be starting off my Tuesday totals again for this year, which help keep me going on my writing goals, and those are more specific because I need precise goals there to shoot for.

What about you? What are your plans for 2014?

Edit Note: After I posted this, I got the new weekly challenge from I am the Diva’s site. It is for a 2014 tangle so I linked back here. Check out all the other entries – lots of creativity and some beautiful designs.

I had started this painting a while ago, but he got put aside for some more pressing work. So happy to be back to work in these waters and hopefully finishing up this week.

It's kind of ironic that the parable is about being grateful for what you have, and as I work on this I am thinking about how wonderful it would be to be swimming in warm waters like these rather than being surrounded by the foot of snow we got over the past week.

But I will say, yesterday morning was so relaxing, sipping coffee by the window, being mesmerized by the huge floofy snowflakes lazily drifting down.

So, if you had a choice, would take the snow or the water?

We finally got a good snow here in Pennsylvania, and I love it. I grew up in Ohio just off Lake Erie and we pretty much had 2 feet of snow from November to March, so PA winters tend to be a bit disappointing.

Initial sketch for a painting I am working on of T Initial sketch for a painting I am working on of The Marsh Wife.

I came across her in the fairytale "The Girl Who Trod on a Loaf" and became intrigued. In the story she gets only a brief mention, and in trying to find additional folk tales about her, nothing really seemed to match up.

In the story, the Marsh Wife lives under the marshes and runs a brewery there, which is why you see the vapors and gases and bubbles rising through the marsh. These minor characters in stories seem to call to me. They deserve so much more than just a passing scene in someone else's tale!

Do you have a favorite 'minor' character from a story that you think deserves more?

"The World is so Full of a Number of Things" is fr "The World is so Full of a Number of Things" is from a series I did at the beginning of 2019.

This group of work was all about routine and repetition and habit. It was not only about the fresh starts that we try to take on with the start of a new year, but also about the ongoing habits that impact our lives.

We see developing new habits and changing ourselves as the path to the future, but I also noticed that maintaining the existing routines was one thing that helps keep my Dad going as his memory fails him.

It is a fine line we all walk to keep moving forward while holding onto those things from the past we still need.

What are you looking forward to in the new year? What are the good things that you are carrying along with you?

Spent the last week cleaning out my dad’s house Spent the last week cleaning out my dad’s house after getting them moved to be close to family for assistance with the challenge of living with Alzheimer’s.

Emotionally exhausted from all the sorting and decision making on what to keep and what can go.

But then you uncover treasures like this: my dad, my brother, and I with Tigger in my grandparents’ back yard. So many wonderful, supportive memories come flooding back from just one image.
