When I was a kid we spent summer vacations on road

When I was a kid we spent summer vacations on road trips visiting relatives. At my grandparents, my brother and I would always nag my grandmother to stop smoking. We did finally convince her, but she still held on to all her cool ashtrays. This little guy now helps me hold my paintbrushes as I work, and I like to think he helps my grandmother continue to keep an eye on me.⁠

While this is not a painting of my grandmother, there is something about it that is reminiscent of her gaze.⁠

I hate talking about myself, but it's been awhile,

I hate talking about myself, but it's been awhile, so it's time for a new introduction post.⁠
⁠
Yep, that's me. My calm demeanor on the outside while inside I am a bundle of stress about all the big things going on and all the little things that just rumble around in my brain.⁠
My painting process helps me deal with that. I can put some music on, let the paint flow, and get into the zone where all that stuff quiets down.⁠
The stuff that actually matters makes it into my planner (I am a HUGE list-maker) and the other stuff I try to let go.⁠
I love our community here in Phoenixville - at this point I have lived here longer than anywhere else in my life. Since its autumn, I spend my weekends toting bike gear as it is Mountain bike race season for my kid and husband, which means Mondays have turned into recovery days!⁠
I am more of a country girl than a city girl - spent time in both, but gotta be out in nature. My love of animals carries over to me indulging my kid with their pet requests - currently a dog, a cat, a bearded dragon, and a few milk snails.⁠
Hmm... what else? I indulge in netflix binges and video games and chocolate, submit my family to really load music while I cook, and often communicate in movie quotes.

This Friday (10/8) is the release party for issue 2 of the PXV Art Mag. I am humbled to be included in this issue with so many of the Phoenixville artist community that I look up to and admire. ⁠

This issue focuses on pandemic art and how we coped and adapted both personally and the larger Phoenixville community. (BTW, that community helped create the free poster by adding their rainbows to the collection during the RE:create installation last year.)⁠

These are the guys that really kicked off my habit of painting rabbits and hares. They came out of an Artist's Way group I was a part of that was run by @creativelightfactory and an exercise where we closed our eyes, spent a few minutes scribbling on the page, and then finding imagery once we opened our eyes. Out jumped sweet, salty, and sarcastic bunnies.⁠

We spent some time researching meanings and mythology around our images. The phrase that stood out most to me is that rabbits represent 'the undeniable current of growth' which was the exact thing I needed at the time.⁠

I didn't actually make it to the shore this summer, but that doesn't mean I wasn't thinking about it. Summer heat and I really don't get along well, but I do love the ocean breeze, the sounds of the waves breaking as they come ashore, the fresh salty scent drifting in the air.⁠⁠

The dreams of the seaside linger on into the fall. Even as we start to slow down and the earth begins its resting seasons, the warm summer thoughts remain.⁠⁠

Growing up in NE Ohio our beach visits did not include a lot of shell collecting. But Lake Erie was great for collecting beach glass (probably the only good side effect of water pollution). ⁠

I remember sitting at the water's edge scouring the sand as each wave rolled back, looking for that glint of blue or green or white. When I was painting this collection I was thinking more of the colors of the surf, but looking at it now, in those background colors, I can see the piles of beach glass we collected, our treasures for the day.⁠

When I start searching for papers and collage elements for a series I will let my mind wander and free associate words and images to guide me as I gather ephemera to use. While I started out water focused for this seaside series, this led me to boats, which led to the crow's nest, which lead to a crow.⁠

She showed herself to me as soon as the background of this painting was done. The light shining on her face, warming her skin. The confident and relaxed state of emerging from the ocean, feeling the cool of the waves and the warmth of the sun, knowing you are exactly where you need to be.⁠
