The backgrounds of my pieces start with a layer of collage work. Stationary, misc papers, old book pages all find their way into my work. The sifting and sorting and searching for just the right pieces can be both frustrating and inspiring. ⁠

This duo is about women's roles and when I pulled out my box of books to grab one of my old fairytale books to look for the wise woman/foolish girl references, the first book I grabbed was "Amy Vanderbilt's Complete Book of Etiquette" from 1952. So much a better fit than my original intent!⁠

Moving on with getting the background layers in and starting to sketch in the details so I can get painting.⁠

Prepping a couple of new panels. ⁠

1. I glop a bunch of gesso on the panel and use an old plastic scraper to spread it across the panel, keeping it pretty loose and leaving lots of texture. (Yes, glop is the correct technical terminology.)⁠
⁠
2. I get my fingers in there to smooth out any bits that seem too rough, and to pick out any dog hairs that may have managed to find their way onto the panel. Thanks for the contribution, Rosie!⁠

3. Watch paint dry. ⁠
