A sister to Patience’s Aster, the Goldenrod is also a member of the Asteraceae family. She is the 2nd girl in the Cherokee legend of the Aster and Goldenrod.
While goldenrod often gets blamed for allergies, its pollen is too heavy to travel far, it is more likely ragweed causing the problems as it blooms at the same time. Goldenrod is an excellent source of pollen for bees and makes a delicious light honey.
Both Kentucky and Nebraska claim the Goldenrod as their state flower.
